They are generally more expensive because less has been done to them. Take for example organic meats, they aren't using steroids, and growth hormones in the animals, like other farmers do because when these are used you can make them bigger and sell more faster. Because organic farmers do not use these practices, they tend to make less money than those who do. So you are basically paying more for better quality. There are a lot of good organic food stores you may want to check out. Also I like using Fit spray on vegetables and fruits if I buy them from the store.

The fast food and junk food capitalists need to keep a large percentage of the population addicted to cheap junk food to make a high profit. The medical industry also gets rich off the problem too. Notice the interesting thread and posts on the problem in the Immortality Institute forum at http://www.imminst.org/forum/index.php?act=ST&f=118&t=12344&s= .

Because organic or natural food is much more expensive to produce. It is not allowed to use growth enhancers, some forms of pesticides and food is not genetically modified. Basically, it's natural food the way it was produced in the past. This type of food (including meat) is produced in smaller quantities and growth procedure is longer and involves more work. Hence organic food is more expensive, but is better for us and environment.

One of the reasons for the high cost of health food is that not as many people buy it. For instance, imagine I could package up a whole trainload of white rice and put it on the supermarket shelves. If I could be sure I could sell it all, then I would go ahead and buy the trainload at a better price per pound and make a bigger profit, but if I knew I would only be able to move one or two car loads of brown rice then I wouldn't be able to get the price break for buying the larger amount and it would cut into my profits. Even if brown rice is cheaper, it's going to cost me more because I'm only buying a small amount of it, so I have to charge more.
In the case of sugar, white sugar is more refined. They basically remove the molasses from it. A good, healthy sugar (high in iron) hasn't had the molasses removed from it yet, so you would think it would be cheaper because it requires less refining, but not so, and here's why: Most of the brown sugar you buy in the store has been made by taking the highly refined white sugar and mixing molasses back into it to make it brown colored. This is an added expense and they do it this way because the factories that make white sugar are enormous and the equipment is able to crank out tons of the white sugar and thereby keep the price down for it. Plus they get molasses as a by-product and can sell it on the market for a little extra cashflow.
The organic foods you buy are usually produced on smaller farms and it takes a lot of work to produce it compared to the huge tractors that plow up hundreds of square miles of farmland for the regular food. It's a lot cheaper to sprinkle some fertilizer around than it is to mix mulch and manure into the soil to get your crops to grow healthy. Furthermore, the bugs and pests eat up a lot of your crops before you can even get them to market, so the price goes up even more if you don't want to use pesticides. Most people won't buy the organic food if it has a spot or two on it, so it might sit on the shelf until it's time to throw it away. Before you know it, the price has gone up again to pay for the investment lost to simple decay.
I love health food and I want to make sure that my food is grown without chemical fetilizers and pesticides, so I grow my own. My back yard is full of fresh organic produce, free for the picking, so I really don't have to pay the high prices in the supermarket. My water bill is a little high but all my friends and family have tons of free health food because I always bring some when I stop by.
I eat like a pig and spend less than $100 per month on groceries, and that's mostly stuff I don't even need.
My advice is to find someone in your area who has a huge garden and offer to pull a few weeds or hoe a row or two. The chances are good that you will go home with tons of fruits and vegetables that he just can't find homes for. You will learn a lot about raising good healthy food and you just might try starting a garden of your own.
Another thing you can do is to get a few hens and let them loose in the backyard to eat the bugs and weeds they find. Homegrown eggs can be almost free, but don't try to buy them in the store unless you are willing to pay over twice as much as regular eggs. People will want to buy them from you, but they are so good that you won't want to sell them, even for twice the price!
So now you see some of the reasons for the high cost of health food. To sum it up, it's mostly the higher cost of producing it and the lower demand when selling it, but the answer is that it doesn't need to be that way if you are not afraid of a little work and you have a little extra time to spend on it.

I know it's not fair. Some people can't even buy fruit of vegtables and they are subjected to eating McDonalds and Burger King.
