Hummersathome (answer above) is 100% right. She told you that medical assistants do not have to earn the title medical assistant through formal education at a vocational school.
-----------------------------------------------------
I am a medical assistant (certified) myself, and have taught the medical assisting curriculum at several schools and online. I can tell you how it goes....
Medical assistants do not have to be licensed, nor certified. Certification is voluntary, but many medical assistants gp with the latest trend and sit for the certification exam. Those who previously posted that a medical assistant MUST be certified are not correct. A medical assistant works under the direct supervision of the doctor or other licensed health care provider who hired them.
If the medical assistant did not have previous experience or formal training at a school the doctor will train and supervise his/her right on the job. The medical assistant will have clear instructions on what to do, and must function only within the scope of practice appropriate for a medical assistant.
Whether it's a novice, or an experienced nurse that's hired to assist the doctor, he/she has the right to be called just that, a medical assistant.
On the flip-side, medical assistants should NEVER encourage patients to call her "nurse". They should always properly introduce themselves by name and profession, and to avoid any confusion, wear a name tag followed by their credential, such as "Donna, Medical Assistant". It is illegal for medical assistants to pose as a nurse.
If you want to learn just about everything you need to know about the medical assistant profession go to MedicalAssistant.net, the best and most referenced website on the Interned dedicated solely to medical assistants. There also is a great medical assistant web forum!!!!

purely docs can prescribe drugs, no longer nurses, or basically having any scientific coaching. So whether or no longer she has that must be thoroughly irrelevent anyhow. Plus you should be an approved physician (basically having an MD does not provide you criminal skill to place in writing a prescription). confident, a scientific worker working for a doctor can call in a prescription. Now the drugstore will nevertheless recieve some sort of documentation given the prescription. in case you think of a doctor has time to do his activity and then make all of the telephone calls himself you're wrong. The common practitioner is giving the preliminary permission and prescription. it isn't any distinctive than your common practitioner writing your a paper script and you handing that to the pharmacist. basically because of the fact which you haven't any longer had any scientific training does no longer mean you won't have the ability to try this. it is basically passing on the counsel. -Connor

Some states only require on the job training and so many hours of company classes with testing to be certified as a medical assistant. So if you are wondering about yourself or someone else you know check with state requirements.

It would be called a certified medical assistant is she went to school. However, if she assists the doctor, then she is an assistant to the doctor, thus, medical assistant. Doctors use them all the time to keep from paying a good LVN or RN. They just need to learn to take bp, pulse, and weight. Always look on the pin the person is wearing. If she/he is wearing an LVN or RN pin, they usually always display it.

Yes, a medical assistant (I believe) attend 16-18 months (depending on the school) and receive a certificate of completion. Otherwise, you are just a receptionist and are not to perform any medical assitance to any medical practitioner.
