OK this is a great question and I love that"Respire" They do this as the are microscopic bubbles in the tank and as there gill plates allow water to pass through they take what they need to survive. Also since we are talking about gills they also use this to urinate so as they "Respire" they urinate so yes fish do pee. HEHE they are so unique and most people enjoy them without knowing th slightest bit about them. Very Very good question keep them coming.

The respiratory organs of a fish are gills (gills are richly supplied with blood vessels). Water passes through them and they absorb the dissolved oxygen from it. Similarly carbon-dioxide is exhaled into the surrounding water.

With help of gills, water is taken through the mouth which passes over the gills for the exchange of gases.
