Indian summer is the return of warm weather after the first real cold snap of fall. It got that name because the Indians fond it a good opportunity to attack the paleface intruders who were pushing them off their land.

Because the leaves change color and and "paint" the landscape in all different colors. That's where the Indian part comes in. The summer part is because it's warm.

i beleive it came from the idea that when the Idians, or farmers, went to harvest, it became too cold, too fast;
they needed another 1 week, 10 days, to get the most out of their crops. They prayed to the Indian Gods, or the famer
God(s), for another 10 days to get the harvest in on time before really cold weather killed the rest of whats-left of the crops.
