Okay...first, there was punk. And as punk lost its energy, from it came something called 'postpunk'. Postpunk was pretty much the end of punk and the beginning of goth. Dirgey bands such as Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, The Cure, The Damned, Bauhaus, ect. burst onto the scene. And, oh, a dreary scene it was. Lacking in the colorful vitality of all that came before it, but having very much a dark energy of its own, it came to be known (appropriately enough) as 'gothic'.......Okay, now that that's out of my system: goths actually wear all sorts or clothing in all the shades of the rainbow. Really. Black is just what they wore at the beginning of the scene and it remains a favorite.

If you look in yhe dictionary, there are many different meanings for Goth. I'm not 100% sure, but it seems as if bits and pieces were taken from each meaning of the word. As we can see and stated black is their color. Again, I'm guessing, Goths have a dark side, they are more quiet than average. In darkness we find the need to be more cautious. Think of it, your in the dark and cant see, so you become less trusting, and more aware of your suroundings. A person living Goth maybe expressing that they don't trust anyone or anything that passes them. So, they dress as they do to scare off "intruders" who could cause harm to them. I don't really know. I am just guessing.

First off, not all goths do. There are goths who wear deep jewel tones, ones who wear white, and cyber goths wear neon. My thought is that its about not toning down who you are. If goths want to wear pink, they don't go for some ugly pastel, they go for all out neon pink. If they want to wear purple, they go with a rich, decadent eggplant purple. They're uncompromising.
Or they could just be practicing for life in a nunnery or a priest.

Maybe because they like the color?
I thought that answer would just be common sense.
And If they wanted to get people's attention, I'm sure they would wear bright neon orange shirts/pants instead.

black represents a lot of this.....darkness, evil, rebellion, shadows
I wear black but I'm not a goth, it just reflects on me.....sometimes i am emotional or just have dark feels aside from happiness...the benfits of wearing black is that I'm fat and black looks slimming as well.
