I had a 1.6 and loved it. Iwould recommend you check al the ancilliarlies. The doors for shutting correctly with an even gap and opf course any obvious accident damage.

WOuld also recommend you drive at low speed off & on the throttle. There can be a lot of driveline shunt as they get older which is a killer in traffic, especially as they have a pretty heavy clutch anyway.

Lat thing to check for is an even idle. The spindles on the airflow buttrfly wear out around 100k miles and it means that the butterly parks inn a slightly different position when it closes allowing more or less air through and consequently a higher or lower idle. Hard to fix although I recall someone offering a shimming service for these.

Apart from that I loved the car. Wife did too as we had the GTI and a 2CV at the time and she went to work before me. You can guess which was on the drive for me when I went out most mornings!

Ive owned one of these for 6 years now. they are like any other cars really. check for crash damage, rattling engines are the norm from these as is lumpy idle speed and kangarooing from standing starts (you get the knack of that soon). The electrics are rubbish but not always a problem.
Stand at the back of the car look at the rear wheels, if they point inwards the axles knackered. This costs £200+ To repair. oil blowing out under revs means the oil seals are shot £100+ to repair. if it turns out to be piston rigs it will be £700+. total rebuild. The interior is an issue as they wear with age the door pockets tend to drop off when you fill them up, but they all rattled from new. dings and dents are normal rust is rare (galvinised) check inside the door shut near the sill step thats the most common problem. ignore the dashes oil pressure gauge irratic movement this is normal too. when you reach 30mph the speedo needle wibbles a bit thats okay too. breather pipes break down with age. sunroofs leak but just gti's sell seals for a few £. parts are cheap and readilly avalible now. good luck.

A 205GTi?? You some sort of masochist? Unless the car has an extensive history of care and attention, and is currently in the hands of an enthusiast, I wouldn't touch one with a bargepole. It will have been thrashed, crashed, bodged, and fu*cked. They weren't up to much when new, let alone now they are years old.

The early 1.6 was a pile of sh*it, and the later 1.9 was slightly less sh*it.

Horrible, fragile, temperamental French cars that haven't worn-well at all.

dont buy it if its under a F-reg mate, they had diffrent engines before then which were sh+t.When looking at it see how it starts from cold because they had abit of trouble with airflow meters, also check the drive shafts, when driving find a carpark or quiet round and get in on full lock while driving forward and backwards,if you hear kncking then they need replacing (caused by wheel spinning)
good luck mate

Rust, evidence of crash under bonnet - different paint tones, dents in body, state of exhaust mechanism, suspension - push car and see if gradual dampening of oscillations, mileage, number of owners, condition of spare wheel, tyre tread, clean or not, repair history, service history, it's age is a problem...
