If you have a brand name computer like DELL, then go to the manufacture's website and look for the drivers. Oh, was there a driver disk that came with your computer?
Or you might OPEN the CASE and see what brand that you see on the sound card or sound chip that is on the board. Try those manufacturer's websites.

Windows needs instructions on how to make the sound card work. The instructions are called a driver. Windows has a lot of drivers already installed with it; others can be downloaded from the net.
For the moment, let's take a basic approach. Click START, then SETTINGS, then CONTROL PANEL. Select ADD HARDWARE. Windows will search for new hardware, and this search may take a while. If it doesn't find the sound card, you'll be offered the opportunity to select hardware from a list. Select your sound card, and Windows will add the driver.
OR - Windows may say that the driver couldn't be found. So you're faced with downloading a driver for it from the manufacturer's website. Here's a simple fix: select some pretty generic sound card from Creative Labs. Windows will install the driver, and the sound card will work. (Creative is generic, and will drive most sound cards.)
Down side: if you have a really top-notch card, the Creative driver may not make all the functions work, but it will make sound happen.
Good luck.

I had the exact same problem.
I downloaded everest and checked who it was that made my motherboard or soundboard. From there just do a google search on that manufacturer and the sort of soundcard you have (you will see on the everest file) Download the right drivers and install them (ps to install an "ini" file click with the right mousebutton and choose install!)
If you don't download the right driver the first time don't worry. You should also do a registry clean then when you are don. www.live.com and then click the windows logo and choose protection and choose tune up.

do you have a seperate sound card ? - if so you need to install the drivers which came with it ....if you are using the "onboard " sound from the motherboard - you will need to find the sound drivers from the disc which came with the board ...or download from the makers web site .....
if you have installed the drivers then check ....
start - control panel - system - hardware - device manager and check if the sound drivers are ok ...if there is a conflict etc you will see a yellow marker ....

Right click My Computer, go to properties. Click the hardware tab, click on device manager. Find your sound card on the list, right click it and update drivers. Make windows find the drivers automatically but don't choose to have it search online.
My comment about the first answer......Windows update will not fix your sound.

proper click my laptop, go with houses, click the hardware tab, and click the gadget manager button. discover your soundcard, and word if it truly is been disabled. if it truly is surely disabled, enable it. you may want to reinstall your drivers.
