There are many different way to have your labour induced. I had at least three of them with my first child.
There is a cream that they rub on your cervix. Doesn't always work well, but it is non invasive.
There is a Pitocin which is an IV medication. That will encourage your uterus to contract. This works well if they can turn it up fast enough.
They can break your water. They will also start Pitocin at this time.
They can put a catheter in your cervix to start you dilating (usually left in for 24 hours) then break your water and start Pitocin.

Induction of labor can be done by trying a medicine that is inserted into the cervix or by medicine through an IV that will start contractions. The cervical medicine is called "Cervidil" (or something close to that). It is inserted and usually will get the ball rolling with labor, but not necesarily put you into hard labor. Many women call Cervidil-CerviHELL because it causes steady pain that really doesn't "dilate" the cervix which is what you want. It only "preps" the cervix to be ready top dilate. The medicine through the IV is called Pitocin and THIS will cause strong contractions, and help the cervix to dilate. The reason most people fear Induction is that you don't get the nice SLOW, progression of pain into hard labor...with induction, you start out in pain and stay that way. Is this your first child?

My water broke and my daughter did not drop down into position. They induced my labor. Alot of times if you are passed your due date they will induce your labor. ALL it is is a medicine they put into your veins through a needle. ITs not painful. They then sometimes have to break your water. That is not painful either. It took me a couple of hours after they induced and I was done. I had my baby girl. GOod Luck. PS. The medicine is called Pitossin.

You will be hooked up to an iv and then pitocin a synthetic form of oxytocin will be pumped through the iv. it works by making you have regular contractions that makes labor happen. I have been induced twice. I have to say though that induction you have much stronger contractions then regular labor so be prepared to ask for an epidural.

You get pitocin in an IV, and it triggers labor to begin. It brings on stronger contractions than natural labor, so it hurts alot worse. It can make labor go faster though. I was induced w/my first and it was very traumatic on both myself and baby. I wouldn't do it again, unless I was overdue. I personally had rather have a c-section than be induced again. (I've had both)

I was supposed to have induced labour by continuous intravenous oxytocin drip as I was past my due date by almost 2 weeks,

A day earlier I was asked to go to the labour ward to have some gel to soften my cervix and get ready for the process, but this process itself induced labour for me!!

The process is simple and no worse than natural labour - infact it will hasten the process. Here is a link with all the facts -

Induced labor they either use hormones or mechanical methods to ripen your cervix.

I was induced because I wasn't dilating enough. It was very painful and afterward too. the second time I had my baby I wasn't induced and there wasn't any pain during or after birth.

it is use of artificial means to initiate childbirth when the health of the mother nor baby would be at risk if pregnancy continued. common cause is that the pregnancy has continued past the estimated delivery date which increases the chance of complications during childbirth. other reasons are pre-eclampsia, rh incompatibility or intrauterine growth retardation. different methods of induction are used: 1. use of prostaglandin pessary to be inserted into the vagina to encourage the cervix to open. 2. use of oxytocin hormones, to be given intravenously to stimulate uterine contraction.

the doctor sets a day to come to the hospital to have your baby, the nurse sticks an IV in your arm and they get you comfortable ,see how far you are dialated and they stick this stuff called petossin in your IV to speed up the contractions and they will give you and epidural if you want one. Then when you are fully dilated you begin pushing.
