Great question ... and great observation! First of all, somebody who considers themselves an expert is someone who is so self-confident that they are closed-minded about other possiblitiies. Once you fall into that smug frame of mind, you're definitely on a path to making lots of mistakes.

Examples of people who think they are experts are
... religious believers who refuse to consider different ideas
... medical doctors who refuse to listen to patients, because they assume patients don't know what they are talking about
... educators who refuse to listen parents because they assume parents don't know what they are talking about
... all Harvard graduates.

Beware of Harvard-educated medical doctors. They will kill you for sure.

Experts are not always wrong-- but maybe the ones you've seen are. Here's how you can tell the difference: Watch for the phony"experts" who only have opinions and appear to be one sided. (There's nothing wrong with an opinion, but it should be IDENTIFIED as such.) Real experts have "expertise" because they've studied a matter using measures for many years themselves, or they have studied the works of real experts. They can compare both sides fairly. Opinionated people don't do that very well.

Lately, the media has become politicized, so they sometimes rely on their phony experts to get across their own point of view or that of their own corporate bosses. When the news does this, it's patently wrong! The key for you is to read up on the topic so you can tell the difference between the truth and a mere opinion. Good thing we live in America, because when people spot a phony expert, they can complain about it LOUDLY.

wikipedia definition of an Expert - An expert is someone widely recognized as a reliable source of knowledge, technique, or skill whose judgment is accorded authority and status by the public or their peers. Experts have prolonged or intense experience through practice and education in a particular field.

The basic difference between an expert and a specialist is that a specialist has to be able to solve a problem and an expert has to know its solution.

The opposite of an expert is generally known as a layperson, while someone who occupies a middle grade of understanding is generally known as a technician and often employed to assist experts. A person may well be an expert in one field and a layperson in many other fields. The concepts of experts and expertise are debated within the field of epistemology under the general heading of expert knowledge.

my view:

An expert is a person. A person is capable of many things including fault. To label a person as an expert is to say that person has the knowledge and understanding of a certain topic to be able to take a problem and solve with the likelihood of succeeding using education and experience. Even at that point the "expert" may not be correct.
Being an "expert also means to me to be able to see your mistakes before harm is done and asking for other "experts opinions and knowledge to solve the problem. Not all problems have clear answers that one person can solve alone. and not all problems have the right answers for some else, and some problems just don't have one answer or the right answers.
right answers are based solely upon the problem viewers perception.

are they always wrong.

No.

They aren't always wrong but they aren't always right either. What the majority of experts that are wrong don't consider is that there are real life problems to every situation. Those real life problems don't usually happen in an expert's studies.

They many times are , your right. They(scientists, health care pracs., mechanics etc.) tell you what THEY THINK you should know based a several occurances. Some are absolutely correct, others give generalized answers . Some things in life have been repeated as fact over and over that it is perceived as true as dished out as "expert" advice. They can be deadly wrong. Peace.

Who made them experts? To me,when there is mass confusion, suddenly every sh't head becomes an expert.Just tune in to CNN,FOX and MSNBC.
I am tired of people that think they know too much in order to look smart. Just look at the freak they brought back from Thailand.
Everyone that thought they know too muchcame on air to give 'expert' opinion.
God bless free speech

They are humans , not angels . But the expert is better than the anexpert one !
Example : a soccer team needs an expert ( trainer ) . Without a trainer ; will make alot of mistakes !

Could you please clarify? Are experts wrong more often than novices? If this is what you are asking, I would like to know the empirical basis for this question.

Because knowing a lot of facts about something often masks a fundamental lack of insight or depth.
