Have changed alternator, ignition module, rotor button, distributor cap and fuel filter. It was sitting up due to bad tranny. But was started once a week and ran 15-20 mins. And will idle fine. Changed gas..let idle close to hour. Could still smell yellow (bad) gas somewhat.Maybe the fuel pump. I need some ideas and appreciate your help. Thank You

This van is seventeen years old and I imagine has a lot of miles on it. I would start thinking about replacing the timing chain as these have a limited life and yours in on borrowed time. I've seen them go bad after 10 to 12 years on this motor. As for the fuel pump, it wouldn't even idle well if that wasn't working right. you can verify this with a pressure gage.

Changing a timing chain isn't a fun job, but can be done in an afternoon if you're mechanically inclined. You will want a service manual and all of the tools and materials beforehand.

You probably have a major vacuum leak that comes into play when the tranny is put in gear. This causes the vacuum system to fail and thus causes the engine to run horribly bad or die. Check all of the vacuum lines. If you're not sure about this then have a mechanic check it out.

It sounds remarkably like a vacuum issue. What type of transmission do you have? Is it overdrive or 3 speed? It could be something as simple as the vacuum modulator on the side of the transmission. Check it out! Good Luck

there is an electronic sensor at the very bottom of your distributer, pull your distributor and change that, or just replace the whole thing both will accomplish the same thing, it is a pressed in part but can be replaced.

i'm not a professional mechanic, but i do know that many vehicles are supposed to idle high on a cold start to help the engine warm up. with a cold engine it's common to stall if the idle is lower. when u hit the gas it auto disables the high idle speed and allows it to stall. u should give it a min to warm up b4 trying to drive it.

these vehicles have notorious O2 sensor and cat problems...if the cat is plugged due to an inoperative O2 sensor the vehicle will run a bit and quit..test them first before you change them though..they are expensive

clean the butterfly in the throttle body. on my 4.3 when that get dirty it will not idle. 2.50 can of spray gumout will more than likely fix it
