Wikipedia is the easy place to start. Usually has photos and links also. Another good way is to go by name and occupation on the search engines.
You can also get short bios by checking through a number of pages for -- World Almanac -- along with www.infoplease. Infoplease has bios by topic and a link to the kids Fact Monster which has lots of current stuff on famous people with brief bios and more links.
