I also enjoy making up a gift basket.
You can put all kinds of different stuff in it. One thing that I put in that everyone really likes is Baby clothes hangers. I pick them up at the dollar store and then are really sturdy.
Since getting pregnant myself I have also considered adding stuff for mom's over night bag. Like travel size shampoo and other travel size stuff like that too. Maybe a book to read.
Get real creative.

I'm not sure about the best, but do not get clothes. The baby will just out grow them in no time and so many people buy clothes anyway. A free day at the spa for mom or a coupon to a classy restaurant and a gift card is always good So that way the person can go get whatever they need and they don't end up with 5 of the same things.

Well i`m goin to be a new mom on dec 25,2006. and i think and feel like the best baby shower gift is is the gift that you feel like they could use. Every thing helps and will be used. So to me every gift is the best gift. When you are like me and cant work you need a lot of things. So i have to depend on my family and friends to get me the things that i need the most. i think everything is the best gift. If you have and questions please feel free to Email me at mel_pruitt@yahoo.com

You're gonna think I'm crazy, but as a mom of two under 3 I highly suggest a set of rechargable batteries and a battery powered screwdriver w/ a very small head.....there will be a GAZILLION toys and gadgets over the next few years needing batteries and more batteries held in by tiny screws...including the new baby monitor she'll probably inevitably get at her shower as well. Trust me...a gift that keeps on giving!

I think that the best baby shower gift is a gift card so that the person can go and pick out what ever it is that they need after the babyshower because you never get evrything that you need and this way you don't end up buying something that another person buys.

handmade gifts are great if you're crafty.
practical gifts are my favorite.
I always make a gift basket with baby first aid supplies, childproofing gear, a sleep wedge for the baby, diapers, etc. It shows you care about the health and well being of the child.
everyone always buys clothes, and cutsie stuff.
or they buy bottles and stuff that really need to be decided upon by the parents. buying a brand of bottles or pacifiers they're not using is kind of thoughtless.
if it's a first time mom a boppy is a necessity. Make sure someone gets one.

Gift baskets are great, and fun to put together, but stay away from clothes, because thats what everyone buys. Or, you could buy clothes that wont fit until they get a little older because by the time they need them, the parents will be wanting more clothes. But, if you want to really buy what parents need, buy diapers!! I am a mother of 3 and my favorite gift was always diapers.

Buy a big , pretty cane basket. Decorate it with satin ribbon in an appropriate colour. place a baby towel set on the bottom to act as a base for the other things, now arrange a variety of everyday practical things in it. Things like lotion, n baby oil, n aromatherapy oils(for mum), etc. Load it up with lots of lil, individually inexpensive things which come in so handy. In the 1st 6 months of becoming a new mum, i thanked one of my friends on numerous occassions because she made up a basket similar to this for me n it came in handy unbelievably often- from 3am when i'd realise i'd forgotten to buy more wipes, to wishing for a nice cuppa but there's no more coffee n stuffed if u've got the energy to pack everything up n go to the shops. Try to include stuff in the basket for mother and baby. Some people kinda lose sight of the mum once there is a new baby to fuss over.

Now that I'm a parent I usually give pkgs. of onesies or sleepers at baby showers. These items are daily basics and because of little oopsies, there need to be a lot of them. People usually prefer to give other types of items so parents usually don't get a lot of these at baby showers. It seems like you can never have too many. :)
