Great and relevant question.

I actually believe that all of us, men and women, are individually composed of male and female qualities. Each gender complements the other within each individual.

I recall once when I had reached a point of quite deep despair early in my marriage. Finally it caught up to me and I discovered that I was having trouble letting go my past. So I broke down in front of my wife. Later I asked her if she thought less of me for crying so profusely. She said that ironically when I was in the throes of the deepest emotion I looked the most masculine she had ever seen me! I was amazed.

Somehow the emotional purge - fully expressing the female side of my nature - made my male side that much stronger. Perhaps when men repress their emotions they weaken or cripple their male strength. And the same could be said for women. Perhaps it puts too much pressure on the heart and other organs. Releasing the emotions restores balance and also restores a sense of meaning that most often is measured by emotions themselves.

Emotions - like many things - build up. They build up for many reasons. Often it is impossible to know exactly why one needs a good, thorough, emotional release. I have found that frequently it is its own language. It has its own reasons. You get in touch with your heart and solar plexus deeply but often without specific images. But it makes you feel very whole, as if you had been reborn on some level.

With deep emotions you have to be careful, though. But on the other hand you cannot predict what other people's responses will be if they experience you crying or emoting in a vulnerable way. There are times when you must not cry publicly. But there are times when you cannot help it and so must not repress your emotions. Other people readily enough then recognize your humanity. They will frequently admire you for showing your emotions and then emerging stronger a a result.

Sometimes when you are in pain or despair, it would be so nice if another person near you showed real emotional empathy. If they remain aloof and cold it can have a lasting negative effect. But in the end you are responsible for your own emotions.

I sometimes feel that specific episodes of body-shattering emotion have saved my life a bit like a thunderstorm can save crops in the middle of a drought. Emotions are as natural as rain. They irrigate the system. They open you to the world allowing you to be in sympathy with all creatures, great and small.

Thanks for asking so relevant a question. Emotions are our shared medium. They bind us all together, men and women; young and old. They allow us to understand each other and they allow us to understand ourselves directly, in a non-verbal, often non-conceptual way. This connects us to the world directly. It makes us feel more deeply alive. And in the end, by respecting our emotional cycles, it makes us stronger.

Emotions are a lot like muscles. They have to be used.

Not at all. There is none so strong as one who isn't afraid to be gentle.
Guys are human, and crying is a normal human response to intense human emotions (Grief OR Joy). NOT Crying makes a guy less of a man (HUman) and more of a machine or an unfeeling creature of some sort.
Besides, women are more attracted to men who aren't afraid to express their true emotions--even if that includes crying when neccessary!
And when did men ever get the notion that crying makes them appear unmanly? From watching too many John Wayne movies? Speaking of John Wayne, his real first name was Marion!
Sometimes I think there should be a Men's Liberation Movement.

If a man cries, that makes him more of a man. Men are humans. They have feelings. It has always made me angry for someone to say that to a little boy. I never told my sons it wasn't okay for them to cry. How ridiculous!

Absolutly NOT! I think it's sexy when a man cries and it does not make them less than a man. Well it depends on what your crying about!

Depends on what we mean by man !
A complete man is capable of all the deep emotions, and tears included !
Crying due to deep emotions is quite in keeping with manly qualities, rather than being stone like, but crying for flimsy things should be unmanly !

Let's face it, girls could be more sensitive than guys, and it's normal, and of course guys can be sensitive, but a guy mustn't cry before the girl in the public eye, THAT is what makes him less of a man, other than that... no.

Only if he's a whiny guy. Otherwise I respect a man that can cry. Proves you have a soft side. I just can't stand a guy that cry like a girl.

NO! I think more of a man if he allows his true feelings to be known than of one who plays macho tough guy 24/7 Happy Saturday!

No, that just makes him a man in touch with his emotions. When he cries because he just got nail cracked, that's a different story.
