You have to apply to a college and go through the college loan office. There are some places that will give you a student loan that are not related to a school, but you are better off working through the financial aid office. Check for small grants and scholarships in your town or from local branches of non-profits like the Elks or the Knights of Columbus or other organizations your mother might belong to or your father belonged to.

Come tax day file as independant so you are not connect to your mom's credit. And then apply for a student loan through your school.

Go to https://fafsa.ed.gov and apply for a federal grant. There may also be grants available in your state that you can apply for. A grant does not have to be paid back and is based on financial need.
