Sounds like you had a pirated version.
Buy your software from a reputable distributor and insist on the certificate of authenticity.

but you haven't explained the question thoroughly how were you trying to update it from an older system or through the Microsoft website. did you already have a legitimate copy of xp on your machine
the product key for any windows xp can only really be used on 1 machine 5 times then it is useless it gets logged with Microsoft.
the product key belongs therefore solely to the disc or computer it was bought with if you hand it out and then have to reboot your PC for any reason and have handed it out you will get an activation window with a really long number on you then have to either do it via the Internet or phone customer services which is usually a toll free number.the can activate windows for you if you have a legal copy and have the product key which on new machines is a sticker on the side of the tower.
if you are trying to upgrade from windows 98 etc then you have to purchase a licence (product key) from Microsoft
if you have bought an illegal copy and are trying to update it via Microsoft some updates require that you validate your copy of windows not all downloads and updates ask you for this so you may have been able to update things before.
if this is the case then Microsoft can detect that you are using a pirated illegal copy and they will ask you to purchase a licence from them.
hope this helps

Windows updates its software at no cost from the "Tools" function on your browser.
If you upgraded to XP, then you have to pay for it.
If you reinstalled XP after a hard drive failure, call Microsoft's number found on your monitor when it pops up and tell them so.

IF you don't update I think you're comp will crash!
This happened to us, we kept getting messages when turned comp on, we ignored them 'cos we couldn't afford £98 and after about 6 weeks our old computer completely crashed. There may have been another reason but it was fine before we started to get the mesages. Be wary!!
