I just bought a house that has lots of tree's in the front yard but no grass. I would like any suggestions on what type of grass I should plant in a shaded area and do I need to wait for spring or can I plant grass seeds now?
I live in Texas and it is just beginning to not hit 100 everyday.
Thank you for any suggestions.

find a grass mix that meets the needs of your to be lawn (high traffic, sun, shade, water rquirements, etc.) The best time to plant is in the fall, in TX do it in October or November, seed and feed as per instrcutions.
In the mean time you may want to throw down some lime to make sure that the soil is well balanced.

Go to Lowes and get whatever grass seed they have that is called sun & shade.
I live in detroit, and right now is the best time to plant, so i will get a nice little lawn, before it goes to sleep for the winter...
I would say you should probably plant in novemeber some time, so the grass will have all winter to grow strong roots for the summer

I would use fescue. I will not reseed itself, but works well and stays green most of the year. Once it establishes itself, it looks great. I live in OK and use it under my trees. Looks good when mowed and grows fairly slowly. You might be able to plant it now, the seed is fairly cheap. Might try to plant a little bit now and see how it works.

Now is best. Go to the garden center and ask for grass seed for shady lawns. They will know what works best in your area.

Use a "shady mix" grass. Top it with peat moss. Water it daily for 2 weeks. Wait until your high temperature is below 85.

I would take a small sample of your soil in a baggie to a garden center or nursery that can analyze it, and have them give you a professional recommendation.

Soils can have different chemical and or mineral mixtures, such as pH balance, and may need various preparations for proper growth.
