Despite having some classics on it, the film was a flop & it was seen as a "son of Sgt. Pepper" & not groundbreaking.
Also, the psychedelic thing was already starting to get old for many people.

Partly because it came after SGT. PEPPER'S , and couldn't possibly compare;
Partly because it wasn't very coherent as an album (it was originally an EP in England, expanded to album length in the US by including singles that didn't fit anywhere else) (sound familiar?);
Partly because it was the soundtrack to a really unwatchable movie, which was the Beatles "jumping the shark" years before the phrase was coined;
Partly because nobody can love everything that an artist produces, so something has to be one's "least favorite Beatles album";
Partly because it didn't move the Beatles forward in the way the other albums did (if you think about it, the Beatles grew and changed more in 6 years as a recording band than nearly anyone else has in a 30-year career, they progressed so quickly that pretty much every album counts as a seminal milestone in their career - except this one);
Partly because it seems sort of dated now, whereas all the others are timeless;
Partly because it was sort of obvious that the Beatles themselves didn't give it nearly the attention that they gave their other albums, and if they didn't care, why should we?

Strawberry Fields and Walrus were great but the others leave a lot to be desired. Anyway they never put all the tracks from one record onto a greatest hits album.

Well really the whole concept of the album fell through, many felt it had no direction and went nowhere as a whole, but neither did sgt. pepper's in which none of the songs are related. I like magical mystery tour myself to be honest.
