traditionally longbows are carved from long straight pieces of wood a recurve is shorter and the power is enhanced by curving the tips back away from the string . recurves are more useful in hunting as they travel thru brush and forest more easily

Normal1 is correct in his definitions. I would only add that recurve bows are typically more powerful and compact, but longbows are more durable.
