because, as a whole, we guys don't like to think anything is our fault. personally i have no problem asking for directions, and adimt freely that i cannot read a map. i am hopeless. every women i know is better than me at reading a map. so there you go, you question, in effect, is flawed. but i have assumed your assumption to be the case.

Your question is self answering.
Men know that they are so amazingly good map reading that the map must be hopelessly inadequate for the task at hand.
And women?
Well we know everything don't we?
Therefore if we cannot manage to make head nor tail of the map we must be acting stupid!

i personally think it is very easy to get lost male or female and road maps are no use because you cant read them while youre driving i do it all the time i think a sense of direction is something youre born with

Yes women are very good map readers, I passed the map to my wife on one trip, showed her the route, and asked her to point out turning off points.
I got lost and asked her to show me our location on the map. she said we were on "This blue road" she had been following a canal!!!

i think its a hereditory thing thats passed down through male genes over the years, same as woman who experience pmt cannot be blamed for our irrational behaviour....it's genetic xx
