With some types of makeup, you get what you pay for, whereas with other the cheaper ones are just as good. With expensive makeup you might be paying for the designer label (Dior doesn't come cheap), the hot celebrity advertising it, or the high-tech ingredients in it.
I would advise that you spend a little extra on mascaras (cheap mascaras are horribly clumpy), foundation and liquid concealer.
Lipgloss, eyeliner, lipliner and eyeshadows tend to have the same ingredients and be about the same quality.
hope this helps! take care x

Sometimes the only difference is packaging. If you read the ingredients on the label of an expensive brand and compare it to the least expensive you'll see that the ingredients are basically the same. One more thing some companies have more than one brand. For example Loreal is the inexpensive equivalent of Lancome. Loreal mascara can sell for(lets say) $4.00 while Lancome's goes for over $20.00 and they are the same company.
Each makeup line expensive or not has very good and not so good products.

Yes, there is a difference. The cheap makeup can irritate some peoples skin if they have sensitive skin. Also the expensive makeup is better for your skin and doesnt come off as easily as cheap makeup. The best cheap makeup would be any in the Target aisles. And the best expensive one, I would say, is Dior or Biotherm.

Unless you hang around people that work in cosmetics or apply make up for a living... nobody can tell. That being said, there are some things like eyeliner, that are just better if you pay a little more. It stays on longer, it doesn't smudge, it looks cleaner. Buy the pot and brush by clinique or Merle Norman and you never have to sharpen anything or worry about the tip flattening out. It lasts months. It's worth it and I can tell the difference when I'm wearing it.

all makeup is made basically in the same factory the difference is certain ingredients/fragrances used. You can even get make up made with your own label on it. The differences in expensive and cheap make up are very slight. They are all made the same way- except reg. m/u compared to sensitive skin m/u as an example. Hope this helps.

The difference is in the quality of the product. Compare Payless shoes to Nine West: leather vs. pleather. The more expensive makeup products are richer in pigment & use higher quality ingredients. As a professional makeup artist, I use a variety of products from a variety of brands--everything from Christian Dior to Wet 'n' Wild.

They probably needlessly experiment more on helpless animals with the expensive variety.
