A psychologist is usually a PhD. With a Masters, you would generally be called a psychiatric social worker or maybe a counselor. A PhD takes having a BA or BS (four years) first, and generally an MA or MS (at least another year, maybe 2), and then some three years or so for the PhD. The reason you can't pin it down any closer than that is that you need to do original research, and you need to write a thesis. There is no way to tell how long that will take. It varies, depending on too many factors. So I would say seven years of education past high school is a minimum, and eight would be more realistic.

BA/BS degrees in psych can be completed in 4 years. however, many want to take additional coursework, or get a teaching lisence, so they stay an extra year. a Masters program requires 36 additional sem hour credits, and 7-9 is consider full time. so we;ree looking at 21 months full-time for a masters, and a couple months less if you go in the summer. a docorate degree (PhD), requires a masters degree, and 2-3 more years of school. Clinical psychologist's require a formal internship. It seeems to me that most psychologists, after attaining the PhD level take 1 or 2 courses a year to stay current.

Depends on whether he graduates or quits. No, really, you could be in school for 8 to 12 more years in order to get the education you need and perhaps even a doctorate.
