I assume you mean antivirus software. There are a number of free online virus scans available, however I usually do not recommend them since they typically do not update their virus signatures as often as a good commercial package like Norton or Mcafee. If you need cheap. just search for free antivirus software on google or ask. If you need good protection with a high degree of reliability, then get Norton Antivirus. It is not all that expensive and is a bit more trustworthy.

The best value has to be the free anti virus programmes ......
unlike a lot of programmes where free usually means inferior ...in the case of anti virus programmes this is not the case .....every one has their own opinion which is the better programme .. and it is down to personal choice a lot of the time ......try the free programmes like avg or avast first ....they are easy to install and work well .....

but as already stated - when you talk about the main programmes in the field its down to choice as there is not one which stands out above the others ....

I've tried AVG, Norton, and Macafee. I like Trend Micro Pc-cillin Internet Suite. You can pick up the 2005 for around $20/yr. It's de best (Nacho Libre voice...). Easy on system resources and very good viral engine (unlike the other 3 I first named).

AVG for Antivirus, ewido for Antispyware, and ZoneAlarm for firewall. All free for personal use.

IMHO, Norton is a nightmare, it sucks the life out of your PC. McAfee is a pain to update.

when you say protector ,i presume you mean p.c security, well you can set up a complete security package for nothing by using the following programs with their links
anti-virus........avast 4.7 (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html)
firewall...........zone alarm free(http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp)
spyware protection
.....adaware personal.....(http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/)
spy-bot search+destroy....(http://www.safer-networking.org/)
spyware blaster.........(http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
ewido anti-spyware........(http://www.ewido.net/en/)
you can use as many anti-spyware programs as you wish as each program detects different types of spyware so the more you have the less chance spyware has of getting on your p.c
you should also download and install a excelent program called "mcafee site advisor"(http://www.siteadvisor.com/),this is a tool for advising you which websites are safe ,and which are not, green tick means its a trusted site, yellow is caution and red is avoid,danger....there is grey also and this means the site hasnt been tested, and you can submit it to mcafee for testing
i use all these programs and i have no virus or spyware problems at all,and it dosent cost me a penny, money i can put into upgrades ect
good luck
