How can you tell if someone is gay?

Unless you run across an openly expressing person who admits they are, you can't.
It is not as easy as looking at someone and saying, "oh they are gay." Sorry it does not work like that. I have been out and about and tried to decipher this myself, but with the new age, and metro-sexuality going on, its all out the window. Gay people have become icons sort of speaking. Straight men are now dipping into our fashion and other things. What once was easily stereotyped as gay no longer can.
So if your hopes of looking at someone and telling is what you hoped, sorry that is not possible. sorry could not help you any better

1. If they tell you.
2. If you see them in a same sex act (and I don't mean just a hug, but it could include a hug is long and romantic, same for kiss).
3. If they engage in a same sex act with you.
4. If they wear a shirt that says "I'm gay" or the like, (unless of course it is a joke).
You asked,"how can you tell if someone is gay". Maybe the real question is "how can I tell if I am gay"

Short answer, you can't really. If you are young and inexperienced and a same sex person is coming on to you in a way that you feel is transgressively intimate the chance is that the person is a predatory gay.
Why not confront him?

Sometimes you can tell by their actions (but not always).. by the words they use.. I know some gay people who all use the word "gorgeous".... also sometimes by the way they walk.. alsol in a restaurant.. if a somewhat handsome waiter comes over to their table, their eyes fix on the waiter for a longer time than normal

There is no one way to tell if someone is gay by looking at them. Here's a thought ....ASK THEM!

some times it isnt as obvious, but if they are the same sex and give you that look that the opposite sex should be giving, becareful. also two people of the same sex act married or engaged it is a good sign, Holding hands, nudgine eachother sitting on the same side of the table rubbing knees. etc...

If they tell you. Otherwise you will never know for sure. You can guess, but you could be wrong and truly offend them.

well you could ask them/ most of the time they will tell you/ other than that i dont think you can tell just by looking at a person. i dont know

You can't. No matter how much "stereotypical behavior" they exhibit, you can't tell for sure. Either ask them, or just let it go.
