It about the entire package. Offense, Defense, leadership, and the effect he has on the success of the team. I know this is a pretty general statement but this IS the criteria.

To begin with, there usually is a nominee from each team for the MVP, and is then narrowed down as the season progresses.

The MVP is seen as the player that contributed more to his team, then all the other candidates. Things like performance offensively and defensively, how did the team play without him, did he elevate the game of his teammates, are among the factors considered.

MVP usually goes to a positional player as they make more of an impact. It is very rare to see it go to a DH or a pitcher, unless they had a season which makes him clearly stand out from the rest.

Award is decided by the Baseball Writers Association, which includes writers and media personnel from all teams.

When the field is narrowed down, every writer makes 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th choices, and points are assigned accordingly. The new MVP is the player who emerges with the most points.

There are no criteria. It's a popular vote among the Baseball Writers Association - two sportwriters from every major league city are given votes (I think they make 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choices, each of which is weighted) and whoever ends up with the highest total is the winner.

there is no specific formula. now they tend to think the player has to be on a winning team a few years back thought it didn't have to be that way. also now it will almost always be a position player/DH the writers feel that pitchers have their own award (Cy Young) so they are rarely mentioned in MVP talks.

It's awarded by Baseball's Writers Assoc. by using the Borda count system for the person who contributes the most to their team's success.
