I know alot about passwords and security and here's what you should do to have a very uncrackable password:

Make your password at least 9 letters, but over 12 is unnecessary. *
Make your password contain atleast 1 number or symbol along with letters. Don't put too many numbers, someone can more easily see you type numbers than letters.
If your password doesn't contain any real words, that is best.
A capitol letter shouldn't be required, but having one would be nice.
You could use something like an abbreviation, but don't make it obvious.
Having a password that is easy to type, but hard to guess is a plus. Here are some examples:

Good$bad26
joepd02rake
pur31pLe31
pcj600fun

or just pick some random letters:

jsks332kj
j24jnGKG
skls3JJ

* When a person is trying to brute force your password (guess randomly in a sequence with a program, until they get your PW) the length of the process goes up DRAMATICALLY with the number of characters you have in your password. You have to think, if you have a 4 letter password and it is all LETTERS, for a program to attempt and guess your password it has to try 26 (letters) for the first character, 26 for the next, and so on. That means the program will have to guess 26 * 26 * 26 * 26 different possibilities. For a computer to do that many calculations, it would take only a few minutes. However, with each letter you add, you are multiplying the time it takes by 26.

Now imagine if you have numbers in it. Instead of the computer having to guess 26 different characters for each letter in your PW, it has to check abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz AND 0123456789, which is 36. You can imagine how much longer and faster it would be to guess your password now.

If you add a character, then it goes up even MORE. (it now has to include ~!@#$%^&*()_+-=[]\;'./,{}|:"<>? )

BUT, after a point your password would take over a year or two to actually guess, so more than like 15 characters with symbols and numbers is just useless.

Hope that helped :)

Use the following instructions on how to create a good password:

1. Use 8 or more characters.
2. Use a combination of both upper and lower case letters.
3. Use numbers, but avoid repetition of numbers (e.g. 5555) and sequential numbers (e.g. 1234).
4. Use special characters, such as @#$ or&.
5. Do not use whole words (e.g. password01).

I highly recommend you use a password manager. A password manager keeps a database of all your login names and corresponding passwords. You set a master password for the password manager. One password to rule them all. (sorry, I like Lord of the Rings). A good password manager also generates random passwords for you, which are incredible hard to break. A recommend either Password Agent or KeePass. But both are excellent free programs.

1. Password Agent http://www.moonsoftware.com/pwagent.asp

2. Keepass http://keepass.sourceforge.net/index.php

The free version of Password Agent only allows 25 passwords while Keepass is unlimited. For beginers, Password Agent is much easier to use than Keepass. However, KeePass is much more secure.

the most secure passwords are those that include all kinds of characters, and are completely random. something like t^34xkd@%_6z$ will be nearly impossible to crack without programs that simply try every possible password. if you choose something random like that, be sure to write it down, as its nearly impossible to remember.

Something with letters, numbers and symbols, in no paticular order is usually the best, like T3$blr. Though, in order to remember it, sometimes picking something like your favorite food and putting numbers in the middle works too, like pi65zza.
