Every year, I buy my Dad shoes. I know it sounds odd, but he is of the mind set that he would never buy expensive shoes for himself. I guess that comes from being part of a large family growing up and dealing with hand me downs and discount stores. So I started buying him shoes about 11 years ago. We go to the mall together every year one day during the week of his birthday. He has even got into the habit of clipping ads from magazines and catalogs of the styles he likes so I'll have an idea where to take him. He's retired now and pushing 70 and this year he wanted Doc Martin Sandals...and he doesn't wear them with socks.
If shoe are out of the question then perhaps you should find him something that he would not have bought for himself that he might have always wanted...Red Rider BB-Gun...Bose wave radio...I-Pod...Mechanical Tie rack...Tickets to an antique car show...
Just figure out what he's interested in...if all else fails, go retro and buy him a slinky, a barrel of monkeys, some silly putty, a Jug-Head comic, and a magic eight ball... He'll get a kick out of it...

I think you should get him a gift card for his favorite store and then take him out for a nice birthday dinner with all of your family and friends.

Get him an "Experrience" gift like Wine & Cheese Tasting or Brewery Tour & Tasting. They have them at Signature Days. There is also a 10% off coupon for them at http://www.007coupons.com/Gifts---Flowers/SignatureDays-com-Coupons/index.html

particularly of procuring for something for him why no longer make something with your very own palms for a transformation? He would be elated in case you do it. try creating an hassle-free greeting card with all your loved ones pictures on it or while you're sturdy at stitching, or carpentaring or something like that do make him something. The however that his new child made something for him with their very own palms and worked on it for some hours particularly of going to a keep and buying a contemporary interior ten minutes would make him extra chuffed than ever. sturdy success =)

I agree with the dinner....wish I had though of that... I have such a hard time finding things my dad would like. He doesn't really appreciate much, and has very few interests. never though of just taking him to dinner.....thats a great idea!

If he wears a suit, get him a tie (polka dots are in)
If he drinks beer, get him "beers of the world"
Wine
Harley Davidson T-Shirt if he's a blue collar guy
Golf Shirt if he plays golf
Dinner at his favorite restaurant, just you and him. (are you comfortable with that? if not, maybe you should change that)
No need for a card... dads don't care about cards

My kids always get their dad aftershave. He has a 10 year supply of Brut but still manages to look surprised and pleased when he gets another.

I suggest that you give him a dinner you think he would enjoy. Or ask him what he has been wanting for so long and give it to him on his birthday!
