do msconfig.

if the error goes away then you know for sure that the culprit is a program running in the background.

Later on, you can check the items one by one and then pinpoint the program responsible for it.

This can have any one of dozens of causes.

It happens most frequently with corrupt drivers or OS files. It can also happen with downloaded files such as videos, especially if bittorrent is used. Also, a faulty memory module can cause this.

You need to make sure you have the latest BIOS for your machine, run an integrity check on your system files (if you are using XP or Win2K, put your system disk into the drive and open a command prompt window, then type 'sfc /scannow'), make sure you have the latest drivers, esp. for graphics cards, download a utility called MemTest86 (www.memtest86.com) and run it to test your RAM, then turn off your screensaver and see if that stops it when you shut down.

You could also try defragmenting your hard drive, then delete the windows swapfile and recreate it.

Failing that, make a backup of all of your files then reformat and reinstall.

Good luck.

Hello,

Could be a software problem (most likely), but the operating system you are using can not read data in memory. Maybe corrupt memory, data, or a program has that area protected.

When did this start?

I get it too. I shall be keeping an eye on the answers with interest. I just click the OK and it makes that error noise and shuts down.
