The amount of land probably isn't the issue - getting the country that already has claim on the land, to cede territorial rights, might be the tough bit.

So if you were insanely rich, maybe you could buy the whole of Manhattan island - but I "think" various authorities are still going to claim rights over it.

Remember, we fought a civil war, when the South wanted to set up it's own country.

I don't think you could, since the land you buy would be within a country. If this was in the US, you would probably be marked as a traitor, then the government would come in and kick you out, since the land belongs to the original country and do you really think they are going to give it up without a HUGE fight.....

No, because you would be buying the land within another country, although to an extent you could have certain laws on your own land, but you would still need building permission to develop that land.

IF you were able to successfully secede from whatever country you bought the land from. Of course, THEN, you would have to get recognition from the UN and they would send a useless bunch of peace keepers there to make sure you didn't hurt yourself.

yeah you could do that however you would need alot of money. You would also have to register yourself in the UCA. You would also have to get people living on your land and getting them to be citizens.
