Enjoy this! Some are popular and other are local dives that are just divine!
I'm native and round! These are my favorites- Houston is so diverse and most folks haven't a clue of that.
From Cuban, Cajun to Vietnamese
Fadi's- [Westheimer] Medterain buffet or sit down- great place.
Hummus, Taboli, chicken Swarma, try the fried cauliflower and Rose drink
Mai's Vietnamese [Milan Street] open 11am-3 am Great spring rolls with peanut sauce and steak w/ garlic is awesome!
Danial Wong's (Vietnamese/Chinese) [Belliare inside loop] Classic Asian food with prime meats and spices, the sparkling chicken and road kill pork are the best, get the jeweled rice with it.
Thelma's BBQ (5th ward) Its a rustic place and featured on "food network". Come hungry and be sweet, those woman work hard for the money!
Irma's Mexican Food (downtown/commerce street?) Enchiladas out of this world, COME EARLY no parking and tight seating, first come first serve, when they are out, so are you. Get the lemonade and drink fast and get more.
Spanish Flower Mexican Food ( main street north side) open 24 hours 6 days a week. The whole menu is good, simple and local, yet it is very representational of the regional favorites, the wait staff has been there for years and Mariachi bands play some times.
October- BBQ in Pasadena Texas- the last big cook off before the Houston Rodeo in February. That is just BBQ heaven- this is international food folks. and they are serious meat eaters.
Seafood- Pappa's or Hills Pier 19-Galveston
Cajun- Floyd's in Clearlake/Nasa Rd#1 [dude this IS floyd landry- the founder of Landry's and sold out and kept his best recipes with him and they are here!] Crayfish to red beans & rice my fav!
Hotdogs- James Coney Island
Hamburgers- Tookies (seabrook/near Kemah) rustic or Beck's Prime (chain in metro houston) for fancy great burgers
Odd things- Ikea furniture store- swedish cafateria is really really good, with meatballs to salmon and lingonberry drink on tap. A play ground for the kids and everything. A real treat.
ChickenWings- Wings Stop at 610 at 45, others are okay, this store of this chain is the best.
Cakes- Three brothers bakery- [Gray street/ River Oaks]
Cake Lady [Friendswood] this woman is just evil delicious!
The chocolate bar (alabama street0 all things you can ever want is right here, and bring some cash...they ain't stupid, its gonna cost ya for that "hit of cocca".
Enjoy this list....take a friend and have some serious fun.
Try new places in the city, if that parking lot is full, than the food it good or its cheap or both. We have a huge asian and hispanic comminuties and the good food is everywhere. Don't eat at a "chain store" that is a waste of money in my home town!
Not joking here- when in doubt ask a Cop. Thery are happy to point out great cheap places to eat.
sorry-didn't spell check- it hated the foreign words, so pardon any typos

Try pappasito's for Mexican Food. It is wonderful, and they give you a lot for your money, so much, it is hard to eat it all.
Also if you are in the Spring area, which is just north of Houston, try "The Potato Patch" you will never find another restaurant like it. It is on 1960, the food is home style. They have everything, fried green tomatoes, fried okra, meatloaf, that is just a few. They make homemade rolls, and the waiters will throw them to you, be sure you can catch. They give a lot of free appetizers, before the food comes. I would highly recommend it. Luther's used to have really good Bar B Que, haven't been there in awhile and pappa's seafood restaurant is the best for seafood. Enjoy.

If you like seafood go to Truluck's or Pappadeux, for Steak and Lobster The Palm is a must, for sushi I would recommend Ra, for Latin cuisine Artistas, for Churrasco (beef) Churrascos or Texas Do Brasil, for burritos Mission burrito, for Pizza New York Pizzeria, for bbq ribs Houstons, for mean buffalo wings Buffalo Wild Wings.
If you need extra info you can go to www.opentable.com.
I have tried all of these restaurants and they are EXCELLENT.

Fogo de Chao in westheimer rd. an ok restaurant with all classes of food and nice meats if you are in for meat, since I am vegan the veggies there were quite on the plain side, but its a nice place to go dine from time to time.
