No its not the fuel pump, Most of time the car will quit running if it is going bad. It can not make it use more gas, Try a simple tune-up check the tire psi. Have a mechniac to read codes on the car to see if a sensor may be causeing the fuel consumption.

A bad fuel pump will not make your car use more gas. A bad fuel pump usually results in a no start condition or possibly a loss of power before it goes bad completely. The best way to check it is to hook up a fuel pressure guage and see if it is within specifications for your vehicle.

If the fuel pump was going, you'd probably hear some noise coming from the tank. Regardless, it would have no effect on fuel consumption.

More than likely, it's something simple. Check your air filter and your tire pressure. These 2 things can greatly affect fuel consumption. If your engine light is on, then you should take it to the shop and get them to read the codes.

I had a reusable air filter on one of my old cars and when it was clean I would get about 500 kms on a tank of gas. When it was dirty, I would get about 350 kms. Always knew when it was time to clean it!!!

Although a bad fuel pump won't make you use more gas, the fuel pump could be pumping the fuel into your crankcase. The easiest way to find out is pull the dipstick and see if the oil smells like gas. Also the oil will be real thin almost like water. If this is not the case, it could be something simple as a dirty air filter or bad spark plugs.

A fuel pump failure will usually set no engine codes and you may get no advanced signs or warnings. Sometimes the pump will give you warning signs that it is about to go but unless you are in tune with your vehicle you may not notice them until after the fact. Signs of pumps in the failure mode include a change in the sound produced by your pump and engine stumbling due to lack of fuel.

Probably not, cuz when your fuel pump goes out, it just goes out one day unexpectedly without warning. It doesn't work better one day and then worse the next, it just works or it doesn't. You could have a leak in your gas tank, possibly a small hole somewhere. My grandpa has the same problem

I've been told that running the Air Conditioner is supposed to make the car use more gas. Not sure if this is true or not.
Same thing though when you have the windows down due to aerodynamics or something.
These are part of a blurb I saw on the news too when gas prices started to spike, about things that cause your car to use more gas.

it would hesitate a lot,,and sometimes be hard to start,,also maybe stall out at red light sometimes,,and the idling of it wont be as smooth as it should be,,and it wont have a lot of power when going up hills, all these symptoms should be there if it is going bad,,you may also have bad fuel filter on it this will cause just about the same thing,, check it out,it may just be the fuel filter,,id replace it anyway,,because this is the cheapest thing to try,,good luck with it,,i hope this help,s.

As the former owner of a Buick (96' Skylark), it seemed that my big *** Buick would use more gas one of two times... either when the oil needed changed badly or when I was too broke to afford to fill the tank...lol.
