Remove unnecessary startup programs and make sure you scan your computer for virus and disk errors regularly. There is also some software that will help you to do a quick shutdown.
You may also use windows hibernation for fast startup and shutdown.

You can use ctrl+alt+del to open the task manager then end the programs you are running... also close all the programs that are exitable in the taskbar (those little icons beside the time), then you can now shut down your computer... by using ctrl+alt+del again...

if it still slow on shutting down, maybe you really have a slow computer, you may add memory cards to speed it up or upgrade your computer...

if you dont wanna purchase and it really shut down slowly... and you are in a RUSH... just pull off the plug or switch off ur avr... =)

Your problem could be a couple of things. 1. You may need more RAM. 2. You may have alot of spyware on your PC. I recommend LavaSoft's Ad-Aware. Its free and very good. Run it once or twice a week to keep your PC clean. Also, I use Registry Cleaner once a week to keep that cleaned out. I think it costs around $40 but well worth it to keep your PC running smoothly.

Yes, clear some memory like photos, videos or mp3 clips. Clear your temporary files before shutting down.

Make sure you shut down your programs in windows before you say I want to shut down. Go to Task Manager and shut down a few processes. Ctrl+Alt+Del to get to Task Manager.
Firewalls are #1 for hanging up shutdown procedures.

do not deltree c:windows that will delete your windows directory including all system files.....that will just make it worse and your pc wont boot in windows till you reformat it.

well, inside of shutting it down completely, just put it on hibernate...that will save your your computer's current state to your hard drive. On most computers, when you go to turn off your computer, hold down the shift key and the 'stand by' button will turn into hibernate. this will shut your comp. off very quickly, and it will turn back on just as fast! Hope this helps! :D
