The rhyme itself was a criticism of monarchy. at the time a reportedly portly prince sat on a wall overlooking a battle, his fall lead to his swift death. the depiction of the character in the rhyme is commonly depicted as an egg to illustrate the fragility of human life, the last part of the rhyme furthers the criticism of the monarchy by stating that for all their power even the noble class are subject to mortality.

The nursery rhyme never states that Humpty Dumpty is an egg! If you are reading it from a nursery rhyme book, the illustrations suggest that he is an egg!! :)

I guess we all assumed he was an egg from our childhood. Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall, all the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't put him together again.

The guy who wrote it probably told everyone that humpty dumpty was an enormously large egg.
