The moon goes around the earth, but it doesn't go around in a circle, instead it goes around in a kind of oval (ellipse). So that means that the distance changes constantly as it goes slightly further away and returns a little closer. Back in ancient history when I was in school, we used to say it was about 220,000 miles away at the closest point and about 250,000 miles away at the furthest point.
PS. Guess how long we have known the distance to the moon? To find out, search on the name Aristarchus - he was a guy who was really good at geometry.
