It is my understanding they don't really work, although I know years ago, many people swore by them. I think the ones who say they work have just been fortunate enough not to have struck a deer. It is somewhat a matter of luck/timing. Being aware of your surroundings will increase your reaction time [hang up and drive!] and watching your speed will help you stop/control the vehicle if necessary. Losing control can sometimes have more disastrous results than actually striking the animal while braking. Certain locations and times of day appear to be worse than others and there is usually more than one deer around at a time, even though you might not see the other(s) [they're quick]. However, remember, this is not always the case.

I've heard quite a few stories from body shop technicians about customers who hit deer even though they had the whistles on their cars.
