He was first in a local Ohio band called The Measles, then joined The James Gang in 1969. With Joe, the James Gang had some big hits - Funk 49, Walk Away, etc.

Then he left the James Gang and formed a band called Barnstorm, which was really the name for a solo project. He then went solo with The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get. This was the album with his big solo hits, Rocky Mountain Way and Meadows. Other solor albums in the early 70s were So What and the live album You Can't Argue With a Sick Mind. He hung out with and toured with the Eagles before joining them.

Then he joined the Eagles in 1976 for Hotel California, The Long Run, and Eagles Live. Between Hotel California and The Long Run, he put out another solo album in 1978 - But Seriously Folks with the major hit - Life's Been Good.

After the Eagles broke up, he continued his solo career with albums such as There Goes the Neighborhood, You Bought it You Name It, The Confessor, Got Any Gum, Ordinary Average Guy, and Songs for a Dying Planet. He also continued to collaborate with members of the Eagles, playing on their albums or having them play on his albums.

After that he rejoined the Eagles in 1994 for their Hell Freezes Over Tour, and they've been touring on and off ever since. He recently rejoined with The James Gang for a tour for the first time in about 35 years. They're currently touring the country.
