I think people are confusing their personal preference with science, which is a mistake. Of course women will think men are more attractive, and men will think women are more attractive, but in biology, your question, is which gender is designed (by creation/evolution) to be the most beautiful, and the answer is indeed the male sex.

If we weren't humans, but another species studying humans, we wouldn't have our own sexual attraction and preference to cloud our judgments. That's why it's easy to look at birds, lions, and every other animal species (except ourselves) and say, YES, the male sex is more showy, more beautiful. It is true in humans too, we would know this if we were objective but we have a hard time being objective since we are in fact humans.

The male human is taller, more muscular, with a finer physique. The male is equipped with unmatched vascularity (veins), muscle tone, and a more fantastic bone structure. Even though I am a heterosexual, sexually attracted to females, I can tell you this without hesitation. What I can't do, however, is tell you WHY this is. Males are the protectors, the dominate sex in any species (with a few rare exceptions like black widow spiders). Males must attract females and scare away other males (predators). This is probably why they are more showy, why they have more fantastic features.

While there may be some truth to what your teacher is saying in the minds of some people, I think it is inappropriate for him to draw conclusions like that. Beauty is such an unscientific term that you can redefine it every time you use it. How do you measure beauty? Science is all about measurement, and beauty is both subjective and unmeasurable.

Personally, I think that what is beautiful specimen in one gender would be positively atrocious in the other. I don't know how old you are, but your teacher is influencing the minds of many young people. Particularly the girls! When people say stuff like that, it has a big impact on the way people think about themselves and each other! It is human nature to generalize. I think your teacher's comments will lead some of the girls in your class to become man-haters or at least to think lower of men in general. We don't need any of that because American society already puts women on a pedestal (relative to men) as it is. One day, some poor fellows will probably be hurt because of the impact of the things your teacher is saying right now. It's just a very bad idea.

In birds, males often sing better than females because they have to sing to attract females. Your question made me think of a video I saw recently on Google where this bird imitated ALL the songs he had heard. He even imitated camera sounds and the sound of a chainsaw because he thought those were sounds from other birds! I think he imitated some car alarms and sirens too! Check it out: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3433507052114896375
There are examples of this sort of thing all throughout nature. It's nice and all, but I don't think your teacher can draw any good conclusions from it. He should not even be saying this. I have to wonder what other nonsense he's telling you all. He's paid to teach science, not his views on aesthetics. Have a wonderful day!

I am female. Each sex is programmed to admire the other. That is how we are made. So it's impossible to give an unbiased view. What is it about a pair of broad male shoulders that makes a woman stand and admire? Why does a fit man with well-developed (not overdeveloped. Over-developed is revolting) muscles make a female heart flutter? There is something about men, bless their cotton socks. Why do the males admire us ladies so? We all like to think that we are more than our legs, figure ,hair and any physical feature. But something has to start the attraction-grab his attention in a positive sort of way. This is where a smile and being nice comes in.Physical attraction is only the very beginning, the icebreaker..Once the ice is broken, the relatinship can get underway.......

In the animal kingdom males are usually more colourful because this is the way they attract females. Male butterflies are not always more colourful or beautiful then female ones. They only need to attract females for reproduction.

For humans, personally I think females are more beautiful then men. Both species want to attract the other. We don't just look to reproduce also for personal pleasure. Males being more beautiful for your teacher could be a personal reason.

It is sometimes true in nature.....the male peacocks are the ones with the beautiful plumage, the females not so much.....in other species it is a song or a call that attracts the female, or perhaps brute force and not "beauty". You have to remember that "beauty" is in the eye of the beholder.
As a straight female, there is nothing more beautiful to me than a male body.....something to spark the dark recesses of my imagination....

I smell someone who thinks males are the most beautiful gender. They are sometimes in the animal kingdom, but definitely not in humans. Unless you['re talking about me. But beautiful is not the word. For some guys, it's suave, some it's rugged, for me it's rakish. (Look it up - that's my word).

My theory is the male birds are more colorful because they always need to be the center of attention and have to do something to make up for lack of common sense so they distract with visual beauty. (no offense guys)

With that said here is the real reason the male birds are more colorful.(well theory anyways) http://www.sciam.com/askexpert_question.cfm?articleID=000EE373-9149-1320-914983414B7F0000&catID=3

Good luck with your test!!

you could argue humans are somewhere in the middle. Woman have curves that send fertility massages.
Men have large testicles/penis relative to their body size, compared to other primates (this relates to faithfulness and promiscuity also-but thats another Q).
So, females attract males by showing fertility.
Males attract females by showing fertility!

For the test remember this, the "right" answer is whatever the teacher says it is, okay?
