Americans know very little about anything outside their own country, less outside their own state, less outside their own home town and even less outside of their own cloistered minds. Less than 10% of Americans are international passport holders, and less than 10% of those will ever use them. Hotdogs, hamburgers, baseball, hotrods, choppers, methamphetamine, hiphop and rap, these they know a lot about. You can find some really good quality automobile maintenance mechanics, hotrod and chopper designers and builders, music makers, rap fakers, but ask any American where or what Beijing is and they won't have a clue. Maybe it's better that way - think about it.

Americans dont know and dont care what is beyond their own borders.. they dont even know properly about their neighboring Canada..!! why ask about china??
They think that whatever CNN tells them is the fact and whatever their Presidents and CIA feed into their brains are the dangers and are matter of national security. Thats the reason why Bush was able to come to power for a second time.

My best friend is Chinese. I talk to her about her culture and ask her about all the stereotypes. In my eyes, after I talked to her, Chinese people are still smart.(the ones from china). She said school there is really hard and that before she moved here her mom told her that americans are not as smart as what she was use to. Hate to say it but, it's true for the most part.

it might have something to do with the complete isolation by the Chinese Communists for several generations.

What I know of China is from my father in law who was a Navy officer from the 30's and 40's who was stationed in many places in China until the Communist took over. He saw a beautiful culture and ancient people destroyed. He has art objects made by sculptors, weavers and painters that are no longer created because the Communists murdered them.

He saw friends of his, imprisoned and murdered because they didn't want to be Communist. And like most people who had a strong connection with China in the 40's, he lost touch with China because China turned its back on him. This is a man who was a medical officer, he was there in China when Japan invaded, he saved lives and cried with the families of those he couldn't save.

For my generation, I remember the forced labor, the imprisonment, the seperation of families, the control of a people from what they thought and said to what they wore. I remember what you did to your own children, your students, not more than a few years ago.

For many years China threatened the world society. Its eaten its own young, I just heard a report on suicide rates for young men, the victims of the one child, one family law, that saw the unnecessary murder of so many female infants, fetuses, that now you have a society of uncivilized men who have no female to ground them.

You now want to use the west to become wealthy. While our government and business's will certainly take advantage of that, many Americans will never trust the Chinese.

When you have cleaned house, let us know.

Because most Americans are ignorant idiots who rely on untrue stereotypes created by the media. We believe those instead of taking the time to learn the truth.

It's all of the cultural differences. We do not speak the same language, therefore we are illiterate in your country.

An American will tell you that Chinese wear pajama-like clothing (traditional dress, such as here: http://www.1koo.com/image-files/qipao.gif), only eat rice and meat, only eat with chopsticks, and everyone works in factories.

What do the Chinese think of America?

I think that they believe that they are the center of the world and that everyone should know THEM. So, why would they want to learn about other countries?

Americans don't know squat about anything past their own borders. I think it's because they don't feel the need to learn about the rest of us.
