I mean think about it... marine mammals can close theirs all the way.. why do we then, have the muscles to open ours even more but not close them... I know crazy question but fun to ponder.

Ummmm ... we're not *marine* mammals. We're pretty much designed to live OUT of the water, so no real need to close our nostrils. We do, however, sometimes need MORE air - and flaring ones nostrils helps with that.
If you plan on spending significant time underwater, they make little clips for those who've never learned to control their nasal breathing. They even put them on a lanyard so you don't lose them if they fall off. What will people think of next?

You know how when people are sleeping, they sometimes snore, due to blocked nasal passages etc. Well, imagine your nose closing all the way - when you don't want it to - seems like it could be a bad thing for people - especially those who have asthma or other breathing problems.
And as far as why we can't but animals can -- we can use our FINGERS to pinch our nose closed, but dogs and cats etc, cannot.

I'm imagining that if your nose could close the hole way what if it happened in your sleep and you couldn't breath and you died? I think it's best that we can't close them imagine if you sneezed and your nose closed my god your whole nose would explode!

I can close mine all the way, as can my daughter. We think you have just not learned how to do it yet, but it can be done.
