I have an old ceiling fan installed in my cabin and i have newly installed an air conditioner. I was wondering what will be the effect of keeping the fan on together with AC. Will it be positive or -ve ? I feel cool air from AC is spread evenly when fan is switched on.

further to answer by kelle:
1. when Fan is on, AC will need to bring the whole room's temprature down
2. When Fan is off, only lower cabin portion will need to be cooled by AC sensor.
So, doesnt it mean decrease in efficiency of AC when fan is on ?

The A\C will have to work harder to cool a larger volume of warm air if you blow the warmer air down to floor level.

you may consider buying a portable fan to blow around the air in the lower portion of your cabin, and use the ceiling fan durring the winter months to blow the warm air down to you when it's cold out.

Fans in conjunction with AC help to keep a room at a more even temperature. However, in the summer the fan should be running (if it's got 2 directions) so that it is pulling the cooler air from the floor up to the ceiling. With all fans that I have seen, this would be clockwise as you look up at it. Similarly, in winter, the fan should be pushing the warmer air at the ceiling toward the floor.
Both instances help to remove the cool-to-warm gradient that you experience going from the floor to the ceiling.

Generally speaking the older fans are very notorious for creating more heat than the amount of cooling they do. You should switch the fan out with a newer one to help control this problem. There are a lot of good ones on the market now for reasonable prices.

No, actually, it helps to circulate the cooler air to make the whole room feel cooler. At first it may seem counterproductive because hot air rises and the fan will push the hot air down, but after the room air is cooled, it will help to circulate.

It would depend on the air flow direction. You will be spinning your electric meter, though. Some ceiling fans "DRAW" a lot of juice!

Since you feel cooler using both, then use both!
