She was an indentured servant who was being brutally treated by her master.

This letter was written by Elizabeth Sprigs, an indentured servant in Maryland, to her father in England. It is clear than conditions for indentured servants had not improved much in the more than 100 years since Richard Freethorne wrote from Virginia to his parents. Note how Sprigs compares her treatment to that of "Negroes."
