I'm new at this and I just can't figure it out.
I have a couple bettas and I'm trying to breed them to earn a little cash. Everything is going wrong.
First, I had my bettas spawn in a tank with gravel.. Not a good idea at all because they burrowed under the gravel and died. I also took the female out too early and she died from being egg bound.
I took out a few to save the father from having his fins full. I had put about 15 in a shallow container with just enough water to cover them. That worked out great! The problem came when they were old enough to eat. I asked what to feed them at the pet store and since they didn't have brine shrimp or first bites. They said this guppy food would be small enough. Well, I fed them. The next day they were dead. The food was broken down and trapped them somehow. That was my first spawn, my second didn't work either. I thought they were swimming horizontally so I took the father out. The next day they were dead!
I need help.

Please let me know what I am doing wrong.
I have a 5 gallon tank now with a sponge filter heater and styrofoam cup at the top.
I don't have any java moss or any plants.

Try some java moss to help feed the fry when they hatch. Also keep some frozen baby brine shrimp on hand for next time. I would suggest feeding a lot less next time and leaving them in your tank and removing the male. Use bottled spring water in your tank and change 25% of the water every other day. You should wait 24-36 hour after hatching before feeding them anyway.

Honestly breeding bettas is a way to lose money. The time and effort alone could make you more money. Then there is the equipment.......

Any way the problem with betta fry is they are so small. Even baby brine shrimp are a bit too big. You need a specialized food like micro worms or infus(some thing or other). Guppy fry are hugh compared to most tropical fish fry.

Honestly you need to read betta talk.

hard boil an egg. then take the yolk and crush it until it is very tiny then feed it or if you want to get it already prepared buy liquifry Baby Plus which contains mostly egg yolk. I have bred bettas since i was 12 and i am now 16. It has worked for me all these years.

24 hour light isn't good for any fish. Indirect sunlight is best for Betta spawning. Direct sunlight will overheat the container.

I am so happy to hear that you are an intelligent caring person. Breeding beta's requires time and patience. But it's really not hard if you're really interested. There are 2 methods. Great that there's nothing in the tank but fish. No gravel and let the males take care of the babies and nest. Please go to this web site http://www.timsalphabettas.com/breeding.html It is an excellent resource for you. Good luck!! And happy betas should follow!
