In vino, veritas. The tendency is for inebriated persons to be truthful, as there is such impairment of the brain activites to formulate a lie (it takes much thinking to construct a believable lie), that the capability is largely lost, and the more impaired their cognitive abilites, the less likely they are to formulate a lie at that point.

If they are chronic, or pathologic liars, and the tales they tell when drunk are long standing, ongoing lies that they have integrated into their personalities, they may well have the capability to lie about that when impaired with alcohol.

Alcohol has special effects on your ability to control your own actions. In simple words, it freezes your ability to identify which topics are fine to be said, and which are not. Hence, drunk people says things they don't usually (or NEVER) say when their minds are clear. However, some take advantage of this effect and consider it as an excuse to say what they they want to say. After that, if things turn out badly, they just say "oh, really? Did I say that? I think I was drunk. Sorry!". So it's really hard to say if a drunker is telling the truth or not. It really depends on individual cases.

Drunks blather on for the sole purpose of hearing themselves blather on... if the truth fits the situation/conversation, they'll tell the truth (though not always in the most truthful way)... if a story or exageration fits the bill better, that's what you'll hear.

It's more about losing that inner voice that says "Wait a minute... why do you want to say that right now?"

In my experience alcohol usually lets things slip thru a person's guard n they tend to be more truthful than they intended. How many times have u heard a friend say: I said what! no i didn't. the day after a big night out.

Alcohol is not a truth serum. It can do both, one minute you may admit to something you would never tell anyone, the next you tell a tale so tall you could shake hands with Peter at the gate of heaven............

People will (drunk people) tell you how much they love you and always want to be your friend etc. It is more of a affection serum than anything because folks will still lie through there teeth after they tell you how much they love you.

You definitely say things when you are drunk that you wouldn't say when sober so I guess it is truth serum of sorts. Have gotten myself in a bit a trouble this way :)

It's not a truth serum, it just makes it so you don't really care anymore what you say.

Alcohol lets the truth come out if enough is drank.
