Here are some All Natural Me Suggestions & Remedies to try to deter ants from entering your home:
1. Before you do anything, you need to clean up all the food, sticky spots and crumbs lying around.
Don't forget to sweep under your couch and behind your stove!
2. Sprinkle a powdery substance where they are entering your home. Good things to sprinkle: natural baby powder, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, coffee grounds, turmeric or powdered charcoal.
3. Spray a soapy mixture of water, soap, vinegar and peppermint essential oil to entry areas. Feel free to add other recommended oils.
4. Spray countertops with vinegar and essential oils.
5. Recommended Essential Oils: Lavender, Citronella, Peppermint, Lemongrass, Cinnamon, Thyme, Rue and Basil.
6. Chemical Free Ant Trap Recipe from busymomsrecipes.com:
Ingredients:
1/3 cup molasses
6 tablespoons sugar
6 tablespoons active dry yeast
Mix ingredients together in a small bowl until they form a smooth past.
Spread the mixture into plastic lid. Any old plastic container will do. Set the mixture near the mouth of ant hill. For kitchen areas, coat a strip of cardboard with the mixture and lay along floor or in crevices where ants travel. Works best with medium to large ants. Try substituting honey for the molasses.

I've managed to get rid of ants by threatening them! I stood over them and said that this was my house and although I've nothing against ants I could not have them in the house. I told them that I am against killing creatures but if they were not gone within a week I would have to buy Nippon to get rid of them. This worked. If this doesn't work, Nippon (from hardware shops, etc) definitely will as it is carried back to the nest and destroys all the ants. Best to give them the chance to leave without being killed first though.

The first ants to come into your home are scout ants.
They are looking for food. They usualy seem to walk aimlessly around you home. If they don't find food, they will look elsewhere.
If they do find food, they will leave a scent trail for the worker ants. Thats when you see them walking in a straight line.
Best thing to get rid of them is to clean more often so the don't invite their family in for food.

You can get ant bait at the grocery store and its worked great for me.
Not immediately tho, it takes about a week.
You do need to put them out when you first see the guys

Put copper coins on all entrances. Ants do not like that. Clean the house of any food remnants, like little crumbs. Good luck.
