Red thread is a pretty common disease of lawns that runs in cycles depending on weather conditions. In the center where I work sometimes we see 2 or 3 cases a summer and other years 100-200 a month.

If it's the first year you had it sometimes if you use a high nitrogen fertilizer (like 37-5-5; nitrogen being the 1st number) the lawn will outgrow the disease. If its been there more than one year there are fungicides that you can get to treat the lawn. Lawn Fungus Control with Bayleton (granules) or liquid Fungonil by Bonide are good treatments. You can get them at good lawn and garden centers.

To help your lawn our never sprinkle after 5:00 PM. If your lawn is wet when the sun goes down it is more susceptible to disease. Also make sure you cut the lawn regularly so you don't stress it. You do want to address this disease because it can kill patches of lawn if it is ignored.

Hope this helps...

Red Thread

Pink and red patches, particularly after rain or heavy dew indicates this fungal disease. A feed with sulphate of ammonia may be all that is needed to get rid of it. Act quickly, it's contagious and can be spread by mowing. Aerate, scarify and feed your turf to prevent recurrence.
