I've been to both and really enjoyed them equally. If you are thinking about travelling there I would suggest spending a week in New Zealand and a week in Australia. Here are the cities you have to visit:

Auckland
Sydney
Cairns
Rotorua
Bathurst

I don't know anything about the South Island so I won't be any help there. Sorry.

New Zealand, since I don't mind a bit of quiet.

If you're into clubbing and pub crawls then you won't find much in New Zealand outside of the major centres.

I guess Australia would be better on this front. Probably explains a lot...

I live in Australia and it is truely beautiful, especially The Sunshine Coast where I live. But my kids grandmother is Maori and one day it would be nice to take them to New Zealand.
