Basically the official line for a census is to determine the share of federal tax that comes back to the state/province and municipal governments. Based on the number residents these various governments get money for schools, hospitals, health care, infrastructure and social services and other federally financed services. The balance has to be made up by local taxes.

Ultimately it's about who get your tax dollar. The more money the federal government wastes the more money the local have governments have to come up with ...therefore higher taxes.

It is a requirement in the US Constitution. Members of the US House of Representatives are allocated by Census results. Federal funds allocated to states are sometimes done with Census information.

Census data is a tool used to determine many things in government. It helps to determine the number of elected representatives per district, used to determine proportionality for fund distribution, tracks population trends which in turn affect where industry and government apply resources, etc.
