Since Alienware sold out to Dell you might want a Dell XPS type gaming laptop, etc. for peak performance, else a Latitude model will do fine.
If you need the best performance get a tailor made Falcon-NorthWest or Voodoo.
For education, an Apple powerbooks are the best if you're on a low budget. Then again if you'd like some movies and games here and there as well the best solution would be an Apple Macbook. Don't go with IBMs because the originals are too old to be useful and the new Lenovos are yet to gain trust. Acers, HPs and Toshibas are well worth a look at too.
Buying off the net is probably the cheapest option but some vendors provide hard to beat prices locally too.

of course the simplest way is to purchase one, if you are looking for a deal-as stated above-dell.com, is terrific-you might also want to check out the website-overstock.com, i use this site, often, and all of my purchase were outstanding quality, shipped in a timely manner-and the site is user-friendly.
if you cannot afford to purchase one up-front-walmart has an excellent layaway plan, and they have dells-and compaqs, also you could rent to own, although you pay more than you would in a store-renting gives you excellent coverage, they will replace your rented one with a brand new one, at the end of your contract, and if anything goes wrong with it during your rental-they will also replace it.

well it depends on where u live and what brand u want
if u live near the shopping centres, u can go down to the electronic hardware stores such as dicksmith and that and ask for it
if u live further away then order it online like go onto their site such as dicksmith or harveynorman and order it there
or u can actually look up for your preffered brand and then go onto their website and order it from there
