Charles Darwin was the official naturalist aboard the H.M.S. Beagle during its world voyage of 1831-36. His observations during the journey led to the development of his theory of evolution. In 1858 he published his ideas of natural selection, and a year later he defined his theories in his Origin of the Species. Darwin's theories started a controversy that continues to this day. Although he was a religious man himself and once considered a career in the church, his theory of evolution is considered by some to be contrary to biblical teachings and therefore destructive to religion
