Being the seat of the Spanish colonial government in past centuries, Manila has been used as the base of numerous Roman Catholic missions to the Philippines. Among the religious orders that have gone to the Philippines include the Dominicans, the Jesuits, the Franciscans, and the Augustinians (which includes the Recollects).

I am a Filipina and am proud to be one. I've been to several places in my native land...I can say that there are other cities more beautiful than Manila like Cebu or Davao. I've been in Manila countless of times though I don't live there.
I am not being hypocritical so I'd say Manila is not really a nice city for me. It's dirty for the most part and polluted wherever you may go. There's trash everywhere, sidewalk vendors, stinky garbage, traffic. Even in Makati, the business central district. Hell, I couldn't walk even in the most sophisticated mall in there for the fear of getting my celfone stolen (for the nth time!)
I'm not talking generalization here so people, get real. Filipinos know what I am talking about and they probably do what I do too. They always keep an eye in their valuables and hold a good grip of their purses when they're walking because someone might mug or snatch them. But Philippines is not that bad. People are friendly and hospitable. In fact, I can say that Filipinos are intelligent, witty, and very talented but most of the times, lazy...

Manila is the Capital of Philippines. And yes, Philippines is rich and vibrant. It was gifted with rich natural resources, friendly and warm people.
Contrary to some travel advisory, it is pretty safe to go and visit. It is commonly exaggeration of media that makes it look bad. Of course you have to stay in areas that is tourist friendly. Some places are not really advisable to visit. Check with the Philippine Department of Tourism and they will give you all information needed.

I find Manila to be overcrowded, dirty and expensive. There are much nicer places in the Philippines to visit/live. I avoid Manila as much as possible.

funny how some people misunderstood your question. manila is great, people just look down on it because they judge it based on first impressions. if you think it is great now, google carlos celdran, go to his site and try to join one of his tours. you'll love manila even more. but that is if you like history. if you don't then party and shop til you drop...manila is one of the best places in the world for that.

yes it is great if only the Philipines is considered but if we compare it to other major cities around the world or in Asia alone, it is not really that great that it needs a lot of development, major cleaning, discipline and everything...
It can be great in some aspects like nightlife, shopping or malling, job oportunities, and at some points, education.
To a Filipino, it can be great.
