I grew up in that era, had a best friend who was a "dead head" who would follow them across the USA, I've seen over 100 professional concerts in my life and didn't go see them...and still don't get into them much.
To me, their jams seemed to linger too long. I love jams, but bootlegs where they played 4 songs at 20 minutes each, with all of it being so layed back that I would nod off just didn't do it for me. I own "Terrapin Station" and "Go to Heaven". Both are very different albums for the dead and I guess that's why I got into them. One incorporates an orchestra, the other is "poppish".
I'm not saying they didn't have talent. They certainly did. It's only personal preference.

They are so stereotyped by people today.
They were an absolutely amazing band, musically. They created undefinable music (mostly during their 2nd sets). People compare Phish to the Dead, saying that Phish picked up where the Dead left off. That's not true, musically. Phish was a great jam band that coast on grooves. The Dead were much more exploratory in their music.
I consider the Grateful Dead one of the best jazz bands ever. Yes, jazz.

They are cool! Jerry Garcia ruled during his time on this lousy planet. He is sadly missed by countless numbers of people.

My brother is fully into them but i find them okay, i bit too harkore for my taste
